Brockleians RFC 1st XV Vs Foots Cray 1st XV
Brocks RFC

A return fixture for Foots Cray saw Brocks at home who had just come off the back of a great performance at Orpington, the weather was very very cold and both teams got out nice and early to warm up in the harsh temperatures.

A few changes to the line-up from last week saw Ash Baker (not fully fit) stand in for Laurie Potter (who had a boo boo) and due to unavoidable absence Mahoney was replaced by Adam Holt (super sub) in the back row with James Huxted resuming his normal place on the wing.

Kick off saw exactly what you would expect from a game between Foots Cray and Brockleians both teams going hammer and tongs at each other. Holman collected only to have the Foots Cray forwards on him in a flash, in fact the only way they would have made it quicker was if Holman had music coming out of him and looked like an ice cream van! Of course if there is one thing we Brocks do well it's give as good as we get and we hit back hard also with the forwards pushing us up to the half way line Bealzy decided to put the opposition winger to the test under the high ball with a 17 stone winger giving chase... he seemed a little distracted by something! We made sure to take note of this weakness and throughout the game made a lot of territory up the right wing with such kicks.

Brocks proceeded to win a couple of scrums against the head and were making slow but steady progress, sort of like Andy Powell before the police caught up with his Golf Buggy... As we entered the opposition 22 we setup camp and held there for a good 5 minutes recycling ball well but failing to make it through a tough opposition defence at which point Ash Baker took it on himself to drop back to the 22 and slot a drop goal to guarantee we came away with points.

I seem to have blocked out the next 10 minutes of the match which might have something to do with the 8 hours of drinking that followed this game... I am assured by El Capitan Bender while we defended hard and well they came with a strong upfront attack and after a number of rucks we began to struggle to organise the backline enough to defend the fringes sufficiently and they burst over to score an impressive effort close enough to the posts to ensure the conversion.

The half time chat saw Bender lose it a little and become an even more inspiring leader, I’d love to quote some of it but the language would force me to make this an adult themed website (same reason you can't see 30% of the tour photos online!).

The 2nd half started well after that chat with none of us willing to let down such an angry man with such a big head! I mean that thing could do some serious damage... As he proved when hit the opposition prop and left him on the ground wondering why so many muddy people had wandered into his bedroom.

After the first half scrumming record Foots Cray decided to opt out of scrums whenever possible, so of course we took the scrum at every opportunity and this eventually resulted in a push over try I'm assured was scored by Holman but it's dark in there and I'm not sticking my head in to verify this! On a serious note our scrums dominated and a special mention has to go out to Shoulders, Manchild and Rhino who formed a front row you wouldn't want to mess with!

Unfortunately Shoulders did run the mouth a little and saw a yellow card for this, I'd like to officially state to anyone reading this employed by the RFU this had nothing to do with the Female Ref trying to keep more than arms reach away from Shoulder's... He's normally a very charming chap!

The final 15 minutes was all about intelligent play and strong defence we tied the ball up and had such a good kick chase we could keep clearance kicks infield. Hate to say it :) Special mention to the wingers for putting the covering players under pressure with quick reactions and huge tackles something that clearly made them very nervous whenever the ball went into the sky.

Final score 10 - 7 to Brocks, yes our first win, but more than that with the last two performances we can really see the hard work and determination of the 1st XV finally coming together and rebuild a once great team. One thing is for sure we may be going up against the unbeaten Lordswood who dropped themselves from the London SE 3 league but if their expecting a walkover their be in for a big shock and if anyone can cause an upset it's this XV right now!

Captain Ian Bender again chooses not to award a man-of-the-match award but instead pats everyone on the back for a great team performance, well done chaps... Special mention to Ian Campbell for standing in at centre where he did a great job destroying any Foots Cray players that came his way!

We won boys! No time to sit back and enjoy, now we have the real work to do... Bring it on Lordswood!
