Bexley RFC 1st XV Vs Brockleians RFC 1st XV
Brocks RFC

Every time in the past 2 seasons we have visited Bexley RFC the heavens have opened up and the pitch has become a swamp, so for a nice change we arrived to baking sunshine and rock hard ground... lovely Rugby conditions! So best thing for it an hour long intensive warm-up, although Lorrie Potter had clearly peaked during the walk to the pitch and worked hard turning into a big sweaty heap!

First 10 minutes we dominated spending most of the game in the Bexley half we played hard and supported well but as with much of our possession at the moment we struggled to convert possession into points.

A strong scrum and solid tackles kept Bexley contained and they never even looked close to scoring, the deadlock was finally broken as Fletch ran the ball 30 yards only to be brought down by a vicious high tackle and Alex Wynne-Williams used the advantage to make a strong run into the corner, nicely converted by the Kiwi... 3rd time’s a charm Potter.

The next 30 came and went with Brocks playing out of their skin, and with a number of brocks fans on the sideline plenty of cheers came as each crunching tackle was put in. Special mention for Fletch who's support play and pressure on the ball was immense something the opposition number 10 is probably still having nightmares about (that and having a bad hair day).

A few more highlights of the 1st 40 included a promising run by Potter up the blind side as he stepped one, drew the next and looked for the offload to set up winger James Huxted who was a little late on the uptake and had just realised he was on a Rugby pitch but wasn't quite sure how or why! Unfortunately it always seemed that the backline was short that final move to put points on the board.

2nd half came round and 10 minutes in Lillie had to take a break from his Saturday afternoon Storytime to play a little Rugby, shortly followed by super sub Potsy who made an appearance sporting bright pink boots, and you could see the fear in the opposition's eyes as he minced onto the field.

Potter then made a bold break from our 22 and was clear on for a try, unfortunately shortly before breaking the speed of sound barrier he ran out of steam and decided to kick the ball forward for anyone keen enough and fit enough to make a break with him... so that was the end of that move! Potter then made a gracious exit grabbing some form of muscle (details not important as he made a miraculous recovery by the time of the dinner), Time to bring on one of those quick young backs we had on the bench... On came Adam Holt... hmm bugger!

65 minutes down and fitness was beginning to effect that smashing defence Brocks had shown so far, luckily a few were still working very hard including Paul Holman and James Huxted who had defended 3 potential tries with storming tackles, so much so that the opposition winger no longer called for the ball and cried a little every time he caught a kick and was in the sights of the "smaller" of the Huxted brothers.

Bexley realised they had to change something and brought on a forward who had clearly just been angered by being kicked out of weight watchers after eating the staff! Captain Bender gathered the Brocks round just in case they hadn't realised that Bexley were just going to give him the ball so he could flatten anything in a green shirt in front of him.

Unfortunately after an intensive game our tackles weren't quite enough and as the Bexley coach stood behind the dead ball line doing the "truffle shuffle" Slough came running through scoring to the cry of "HEY YOU GUYS".

7 - 7 and the Brocks had woken up again, fitness problems flew out the window as we made break after break only to realise that fitness problems had climbed back in the window and 80 minutes came and went without us being unable to finish the required moves.

A disappointing game if I’m being honest as we played well enough to put 20+ points on the board and only managed 7 not giving ourselves the buffer that we needed during the last 15 minutes of the game. Captain's Man-of-the-Match award goes to Paul Holman for the hard work he put in for the full 80 minutes including strong ball carrying and big tackles.
